CRITICAL REQUIREMENTS:
MANDATORY
#1: 220V ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT REQUIRED
Electric cooktops require a dedicated 220V electrical circuit (also called 240V). This is typically a 30-50 amp circuit. Standard 110V wall outlets CANNOT power electric cooktops. If no 220V circuit exists, an electrician must install one before cooktop installation (additional cost $400-800).
MANDATORY
#2: EXISTING DUCTWORK REQUIRED
Electric downdraft cooktops REQUIRE existing ductwork underneath or behind the cooktop location. Downdraft ventilation pulls smoke and odors downward through this ductwork to the exterior. If no ductwork exists, it must be installed before cooktop installation (additional cost $800-2000+).
